Beloved San Francisco songwriter Sonny Smith returns to Australian shores this October as his cult garage-pop/folk-rock outfit Sonny & The Sunsets for special solo show as party of Franks Wild Years 10th birthday celebrations. Sonny’s solo set brings his singular songbook to the stage with jangly charm, melodic warmth and plenty of character.
Across more than a dozen albums, Sonny & The Sunsets have built a world all their own — one of sun-faded boardwalks, late-night diners, lonesome motel rooms and backstreet parties. Blending 60s pop, garage rock, country soul, doo-wop and lo-fi folk, woven together by Sonny’s unmistakable voice and gently surreal storytelling. A true cult figure in the American indie world, Sonny’s work spans far beyond music — he’s also a playwright, filmmaker, and visual artist, and that creativity spills into every show. Expect an evening of offbeat charm, disarming honesty, and melodies you’ll be humming long after the lights come up — a rare and intimate performance from one of indie music’s most quietly beloved figures.
